She was 17. He was 20.
Both had been living in the United States for less than 3 years.
He was an orphan by age 10 and came to the US by himself at age 18 in hopes of finding work and a future.
She lived with her mom, an abusive step father, and was responsible for taking care of her 3 younger siblings.
Both lived very hard lives, both endured much.
They met each other through his brother. They met, hung out, spoke on the phone, and fell in love. After a year of dating, both decided they needed to have each other for the rest of their lives.
On the first of June 1983, in a court room in Miami, with no one present but her mother and the judge, they exchanged their vows and before God joined in holy matrimony. There was no white wedding dress. There was no fancy tuxedo. No bridesmaids, no decorations, no photos, no flowers, no friends or family, just the legal documents to sign.
Many told them it wouldn't last. Many told them they were foolish and unwise. Many told them it would end sooner than it started. But they didn't listen to them. They could only do one thing. Trust in the Lord for the wisdom to make it.
It's true, it wasn't easy. They both struggled. But never did they give up. They kept on believing for God's goodness to meet them wherever they went. And He was faithful to them. Never did they lack work or pay.
Time went on.
She was now 22. He was now 25. They had their 1st born baby boy.
In June 1988, they purchased their first house that would become their home for the next 24 years and still continues to be.
In that home they raised 3 children, all gifts from God.
The first born is now 25 serving his country in the US Coast Guard.
The second born is finishing her degree in college.
The last one is entering his senior year of high school.
So you see, many were wrong. They did endure.
And they continue to trust God to be their help, their strength, their guidance, and their everlasting hope.
That's what got them through it. True love. It always endures.
Happy 29th anniversary to the hardest working people I know: my mami and papi.
Thank you for raising us based on the powerful word of God. We would not be where we are now if it weren't for your hard work, dedication, wisdom, guidance, support, and love you have always shown us.
May God continue to bless and prosper your marriage with many more years of love and happiness.
We love you, mami and papi!!
"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails."
1 Corinthians 13:7-8.
